The last battle
Two figures run, panicked through the night. Gunfire can be heard- screams, and the sharp, sickly sound of bones being cracked in two. Lightning flashes and, for a second, their faces are visible against the dark sky. Both him and her have looks of fear and dread upon their faces.
Commander Cliff Parker scanned the horizon. There they were. The icy hoarde. The frozen army that had haunted his dreams ever since that night, long ago.
This was it. He called out to his unit, gathered in the courtyard of the fortress below.
He pointed to one young private.
"What's your name, private?"
"Jennifer Smith, sir!"
"And why did you join ICE, Jennifer?"
"I wanted to protect my family, sir." she replied, looking steadfast into Parker's eyes. "I don't want them to ever be in danger from one of those things".
Parker nodded at her and looked away.
"How very noble of you. You want to know why I do what I do? You want to know why I fight for ICE?"
They continue to run across the barren landscape. Up ahead looms a dark, hidden mass- an abandoned military outpost. He indicates to the open door and they both run in. From outside, a hissing, gargling noise is heard. The door slides quickly shut behind them.
"I hate the bastards. Every last one of them. I can't stand 'em."
The brutal honesty of the commander's words register surprise some of the men.
"I can't stand 'em, and I won't stop until every single one is dead. That's it- that's the truth.", the Commander admitted. "I don't do this for some noble cause. Hell, I could care less about the people back home. I kill for revenge."
Alarms begin to go off- sirens start to wail.
"This is it!", Parker yelled. "They're here! Get to your positions, and give 'em everything you've got!"
He walked back to his vantage point near the top of the fortress. Below, thousands of lurching, growling monstrosities move slowly towards the walls. He lost his wife to them, on that fateful night. He would never forgive himself.
They run down a dark corridor, until they reach a crossroads. Fumbling with a map, he tries to gauge their location. Unspeakable noises can be heard from the corridor behind them- silhouettes are projected against the walls. She screams and looks at him with tearful eyes. He yells, "C'mon!", grabs her hand and drags her off down a side passage.
The soldiers had taken up their arms and stared out at the creatures. They were horrific. Various disgusting liquids dripped from their crevices, splashing onto the grass and shrubs below, shriveling up and dying.
"On my command...!", Parker shouted.
All of a sudden the base shook with tremendous force. The solid rock walls of the base began to split. The very ground seemed to corrode, falling away into itself.
They continue to run along the darkened passage. Their footsteps bang heavily along the iron floor, as their pursuers grow ever closer. They arrive at another T-junction and momentarily pause. From around one of the corners, a devillish entity appears. Slopping it's vanilla contents over the floor, the Mcflurry leers aggressively at them.
The icecream army began to attack, and the soldiers opened fire. Thousands of assorted, dairy-based desserts moved towards the front of the fortress as 99s began to break through the foundations. Bullets began to fly everywhere and blood splattered against the walls. Screams of agony and pain were drowned out by the crunching of Choc ice skin.
Parker knew it was already lost.
"Fall back, men, fall back!", he screamed, in an attempt to prevent a total bloodbath. He began to run towards the exit, but was confronted by a bloodthirsty Twister. "Twist this!", he shouted- and blasted the creature in half with his rifle. Unamused groans could be heard from down below.
He sprinted away, firing off shots behind him as he ran. Gradually the sounds of fighting began to die off, and he found himself nearing the exit lobby. Walking backwards covering the doorway, he waited for more soldiers to come running through.
Suddenly, he bumped into something hard. Spinning around, he raised his rifle and got ready to fire. "Commander!", it yelled.
He realised what, or who, he was aiming at.
"Private Jennifer! Are you the only survivor?", he asked.
"I'm afraid so, sir. The others were ripped apart. The enemy Fabs were just too strong.", she said, as she looked down at the floor. "Nobody expected the Neapolitan ice cream... it was a massacre."
"Don't worry about that, Private", said Parker, urgently. "We need to get out of here!"
Jennifer grabbed her gun and they ran out of the outpost door into the black, foreboding night.
They spin on the spot and escape down another empty length of corridor. Looking around the corner, they see light, shining brightly from the end of the tunnel. Bathed in that light are two recon soldiers standing by an escape helicopter. They gesture with their hands and yell something inaudible. The man and the woman start running, but they are too late. The woman trips and falls. She calls out, "Parker, just go! Leave me!"
Behind her, the giant Mcflurry readies itself to pounce.
"I won't lose you!", he shouts. He aims and fires, taking the carnivorous frozen snack down. Extending his arm, she grabs his hand and they run for the light.
"Sir... thank you."
